Moving to Manchester: What New Residents Need to Know

Greater Manchester is made up of 10 metropolitan boroughs — Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside and Wigan — each its own local authority with its own Council Tax, schools admissions and services. Manchester City Council’s Band D rate for 2026/27 is £2,312.04, close to neighbouring Trafford’s £2,289.79 for the same year — a smaller gap than London’s borough spread, but still worth checking your specific council rather than assuming a shared “Manchester rate.”

Transport for Greater Manchester has been bringing buses under local public control through the Bee Network, with an eventual goal of one unified ticketing system across buses and trams rather than separate operators charging separately. Fares are revised periodically, so check tfgm.com or news.tfgm.com directly for the current rate instead of relying on a figure that may be out of date by the time you read this.

For a Year 7 transfer, Manchester City Council requires specific proof of address — your latest Council Tax bill plus a tenancy agreement, mortgage statement, or a utility bill dated within the last three months — submitted by the national closing date of 31 October. Average private rent in Manchester was £1,373 a month in August 2026, up 4.2% from £1,317 a year earlier, per ONS local housing data — noticeably below London’s citywide average, though (as with any city) it varies a good deal by specific area.
